We’ve been hearing about the 21 Jump Street film for so long now that it feels odd to think that it’s actually going to start shooting next year. And while we still have our concerns about the quality, we’re putting our trust in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller and creative spearhead Jonah Hill. The team appears to be locking in their first name actor, with Channing Tatum about to start negotiations to star alongside Hill.
Deadline reports that Tatum has apparently leapfrogged to the top of the list for casting, and while his role isn’t completely clear yet, the team over at Hitfix had a gander at one draft of the script and have revealed that Tatum would play Hill’s cop partner. Oh, and that it’s planned as a flat out raunchy comedy – think The Other Guys with even more filfthy jokes.
The original TV show, of course, launched in 1987 under the guidance of producing legend Stephen J Cannell and helped the career of several actors, including launching Johnny Depp on his road to stardom. Hill has been trying to get the movie made for a while now (while hoping Depp might agree to at least cameo) and has cranked out a script with Scott Pilgrim’s Michael Bacall with work from the Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol team of Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec.
21 Jump Street will arrive on April 20, 2012.

Channing Tatum Up For 21 Jump Street
Friday, November 12th, 2010Another American Soldier Role?
Tuesday, November 9th, 2010Director Randall Wallace is rumored to be putting a indie drama together entitled Love and Honor, set during the reign in mid-18th century of Russian czarina Catherine the Great. Who does he want to play the American solider? Yup, Channing. Here’s a small snip of what was said in a news report recently done by Cinema Blend
Tatum’s character is a Virginian sent by Benjamin Franklin to Russia in order to talk Catherine out of sending her troops to his shores in support of the British in the forthcoming American Revolution. He poses as an Englishman, though, offering his services in support of her army, though it’s only a matter of time before he’s got her in bed– he is Channing Tatum after all, so how can you blame her? Angelina Jolie had at one point been attached to play Catherine, and there’s an offer out to Anne Hathaway to play an attendant in the court who is Tatum’s actual love interest, but no one other than Tatum is actually involved.
Channing Tatum planning ‘Ten Year’ reunion
Thursday, August 26th, 2010A new generation of talent is getting ready to tackle the high school reunion movie.
Channing Tatum is working with Jamie Linden and producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill on “Ten Year,” an ensemble drama about friends reuniting a decade after their graduation.
Linden, who wrote “We Are Marshall,” is penning the script and will direct. He also wrote “Dear John,” which starred Tatum and was based on a Nicholas Sparks novel.
Tatum has been heavily involved in the development process. He also will star and join Temple Hill in producing the film with his 33andOut Prods. partner Reid Carolin.
The script is being written with specific actors in mind, with a partial list including Tatum’s wife, Jenna Dewan (“Step Up”); pals Anna Faris and her husband, Chris Pratt; Chris Pine; and Scott Porter (“Friday Night Lights”).
There are no deals in place for the actors, and involvement will depend on availability. The indie production also is assembling financing, though the filmmakers are hoping to begin shooting in November.
Tatum, repped by UTA and Management 360, is shooting “The Vow” with Rachel McAdams in Toronto.
Linden is repped by Paradigm and Magnet Management.
Stephen Sommers to Direct ‘G.I. Joe’ Sequel
Wednesday, August 4th, 2010“G.I. Joe” director Stephen Sommers will return to direct Paramount’s sequel, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.
There had been some doubts about whether Sommers would be brought back into the “Joe” fold, as there were conflicting reports across the blogosphere last summer that there had been some tension between Sommers and the studio, but the alleged bad blood appears to have been resolved.
Channing Tatum is expected to reprise his role as Capt. Duke Hauser in the sequel, which is still in development at Paramount.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Collider reported earlier this year that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (“Zombieland”) were hired to write the sequel, and I’m told that the studio is happy with the draft they turned in.
Sommers will likely produce with Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
“G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” grossed more than $300 million worldwide last year on a reported production budget of $175 million, not including prints and advertising.
Sommers previously directed “The Mummy” and “Van Helsing,” and he has a “Tarzan” movie in development at Warner Bros.
Sommers is represented by WME.
